Why Choose Botshilu Bambinos

What We Offer Throughout Your Pregnancy

01

FREE Antenatal Classes

Knowledge transforms anxiety into confidence. Our comprehensive antenatal education programme prepares you thoroughly for labour, birth, and early parenthood, covering everything you need to know in relaxed supportive environment where no question is too small or embarrassing.

What Our Antenatal Classes Cover:

Pregnancy Health and Wellness:

  • Normal pregnancy changes (what to expect each trimester, the good, uncomfortable, and concerning)
  • Nutrition during pregnancy (what to eat, what to avoid, managing nausea and heartburn, healthy weight gain)
  • Exercise and activity during pregnancy (what’s safe, what to avoid, staying active supporting easier labour)
  • Warning signs requiring medical attention (when to call your doctor or come to hospital)
  • Common pregnancy discomforts and how to manage them (backache, leg cramps, swelling, insomnia, constipation)

Preparing for Labour & Birth:

  • Recognising labour signs (when to come to hospital, differentiating false labour from real labour)
  • Stages of labour (what happens during each stage, how long labour typically takes, what you’ll experience)
  • Pain management options (natural pain relief techniques, breathing, positioning, movement, massage; medical pain relief, epidural, pethidine, gas, benefits and limitations of each)
  • Medical interventions (when and why interventions might be needed, induction, augmentation, assisted delivery, caesarean section)
  • Birth plans (creating flexible preferences whilst understanding birth sometimes requires adaptability)
  • What partners can do to support during labour (practical ways to help, comfort measures, advocacy)

Your Hospital Stay:

  • What to pack for the hospital (for you, for baby, for partner, comprehensive packing lists provided)
  • What happens immediately after birth (skin-to-skin contact, delayed cord clamping, newborn assessments)
  • Rooming-in (baby stays with you promoting bonding and breastfeeding)
  • Post-delivery recovery (what to expect physically and emotionally, managing after-pains, healing from delivery)

Breastfeeding Education:

  • Why breastfeeding matters (benefits for baby’s health, development, immunity; benefits for mother)
  • How breastfeeding works (milk production, supply and demand, let-down reflex)
  • Getting started (positioning and latching, proper latch prevents pain and ensures effective feeding)
  • Common challenges and solutions (sore nipples, engorgement, blocked ducts, mastitis, low supply concerns)
  • When and how to ask for help (lactation support available throughout hospital stay and after discharge)
  • Expressing and storing breast milk (when and why you might express, proper storage)
  • Breastfeeding and returning to work
  • Partner and family support for breastfeeding

Newborn Care:

  • What newborns look and act like (realistic expectations, newborns don’t look like three-month-olds, they cry a lot, sleep erratically, and need frequent feeding)
  • Holding, handling, and comforting your baby safely
  • Nappy changing and cord care
  • Bathing baby (when to start, how to do safely, frequency)
  • Dressing baby appropriately (how many layers, checking if too hot or cold)
  • Safe sleep practices (back to sleep, safe sleep environment, reducing SIDS risk)
  • Understanding baby’s cues (hunger cues, tired cues, overstimulated cues)
  • Normal newborn behaviour (cluster feeding, evening fussiness, sleep patterns)
  • When to worry (warning signs requiring medical attention, fever, dehydration, jaundice, breathing problems)

Emotional Preparation:

  • Emotional changes during pregnancy and after birth (hormones, mood swings, anxiety, adjusting to parenthood)
  • Baby blues versus postnatal depression (differences, when to seek help)
  • Relationship changes (how becoming parents affects partnerships, maintaining connection, sharing responsibilities)
  • Building support networks (importance of asking for and accepting help)
  • Self-care for new parents (looking after yourself whilst caring for baby)

Classes are:

  • Free for all Botshilu Bambinos members (no hidden costs, no registration fees)
  • Comprehensive (multi-week programme covering everything thoroughly, not rushed one-hour overview)
  • Interactive (ask questions, practice techniques, engage with content, not just passive lectures)
  • Taught by experts (experienced midwives and nurses who’ve attended thousands of births, lactation consultants, paediatricians)
  • Partners and support people welcome (we encourage partners attending, supporting during labour requires understanding what’s happening)
  • Small groups (intimate class sizes enabling individual attention and building community with other expectant parents)
  • Practical (hands-on practice with dolls for holding, nappy changing, bathing; demonstrations of birth positions, breathing techniques, breastfeeding positions)
  • Scheduled flexibly (daytime and evening classes accommodating work schedules, Saturday options available)

Attending antenatal classes dramatically improves birth experiences
, women who attend classes report feeling more confident, less anxious, more satisfied with their births, better able to cope with labour pain, more successful with breastfeeding, and more confident caring for newborns. Knowledge transforms fear into empowerment.

Partners who attend classes are more effective birth supporters, knowing how to help during labour, understanding what’s normal versus concerning, feeling included in the process rather than helpless observers. This strengthens partnerships during vulnerable transition to parenthood.

What You'll Receive When You Deliver with Us

The day your baby is born is most significant day of your life, transformative moment when you become parent, when your baby enters world, when family expands. We honour this profound transition with special touches ensuring you and baby have everything needed whilst celebrating this miraculous arrival.

01

Complimentary Mother & Baby Bag

After giving birth, you’re exhausted, overwhelmed, adjusting to massive physical and emotional changes whilst caring for newborn with intense needs. The last thing you need is worrying about whether you have right supplies.

Your complimentary Mother and Baby Bag contains carefully selected essentials supporting your first days together:

For Mother:

  • Maternity pads (hospital-grade, essential for post-delivery bleeding)
  • Breast pads (disposable nursing pads for leaking breast milk)
  • Nipple cream (soothing sore nipples during breastfeeding establishment)
  • Toiletries (travel-size basics for refreshing after birth)
  • Post-delivery care information (what to expect, when to seek help)
  • Relaxation items (small comforts during recovery)

For Baby:

  • Nappies (newborn size, enough for first days)
  • Baby wipes (gentle for newborn’s delicate skin)
  • Baby blanket (soft, warm, perfect for swaddling)
  • Baby toiletries (gentle wash, lotion suitable for newborns)
  • Newborn care information (quick reference guides)

These aren’t random promotional items from companies, we’ve thoughtfully selected quality products useful during those first days when everything feels overwhelming and you’re grateful for anything making life slightly easier.

02

Baby Footprint Keepsake Frame

Time moves impossibly fast, your newborn’s tiny perfection transforms quickly into growing baby, toddler, child. Those first days are fleeting, precious beyond measure, and you’ll treasure tangible reminders of how small and perfect baby was.

Shortly after birth, we create precious keepsake of your baby’s tiny footprints, pressed in ink and placed in beautiful frame. Your baby’s actual footprints from their first day earthside, preserved forever.

This isn’t just decoration, it’s profound memento of the day your life changed forever, the day you first held your baby, the beginning of your journey together. Years from now, you’ll look at those impossibly tiny footprints and remember the overwhelming love, the exhaustion, the wonder of those first precious days.

Many parents display these frames in baby’s nursery, in family photo displays, or keep them as treasured personal mementos. They become family heirlooms, tangible connection to that transformative moment when baby entered your life.

Road to Health Booklet

Your baby’s Road to Health Booklet  is an essential document accompanying them throughout childhood, a comprehensive health record tracking:

  • Birth details and measurements (weight, length, head circumference)
  • All immunisations received (maintaining up-to-date vaccination record)
  • Growth monitoring (regular weight and height measurements plotted on growth charts, tracking development)
  • Developmental milestones (sitting, crawling, walking, talking)
  • Illnesses and hospitalisations
  • Vitamin A supplementation and deworming
  • Health professional contacts and clinic visits

Every healthcare provider, from clinic nurses to hospital doctors, relies on the Road to Health booklet to understand your child’s health history. You’ll bring it to every clinic visit, every doctor’s appointment, every hospitalisation throughout childhood.

We complete your baby’s road to health booklet thoroughly before discharge, ensuring accurate information is recorded from birth, the first vaccine is documented, and initial assessments are recorded. We explain how to use it, emphasise its importance, and stress keeping it safe (lost road to health booklets are problematic, immunisation records lost, growth monitoring disrupted).

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Concerns and Honest Answers

Join as soon as you're ready, as early as you like. The earlier you register, the more you benefit throughout your entire pregnancy. Many women register after confirming pregnancy (8-12 weeks), but you can join at any stage. We welcome you whenever you're ready.

No, Botshilu Bambinos is optional programme enhancing your experience. However, we strongly encourage joining because programme benefits (free antenatal classes, maternity guide, hospital bag, keepsakes, community) dramatically improve your confidence, preparation, and satisfaction. Registration is free and simple; there's no reason not to join.

Absolutely yes, we encourage partners attending antenatal classes. Partners who understand labour process are more effective birth supporters. Family members (mothers, sisters, friends) planning to support during labour are also welcome attending classes. Creating informed supportive birth team improves outcomes for everyone.

Attend as many as possible, each session covers important information. However, we understand life happens (work commitments, illness, childcare challenges). If you miss sessions, we can provide materials, recommend key sessions to prioritise, and answer questions ensuring you're still prepared. Don't skip classes altogether because you can't attend every single one, come to as many as you can.

Even experienced mothers benefit from refresher classes, memory fades, practices evolve (evidence-based care recommendations change), previous experiences might have been complicated creating anxiety, partners might not have attended classes previously. Additionally, antenatal classes create community with other pregnant women, valuable whether first baby or fifth. We welcome both first-time mothers and experienced parents.

Botshilu Bambinos programme itself is completely free, no fees for registration, antenatal classes, maternity guide, hospital bag, vaccines, or keepsakes. Your medical aid covers your actual healthcare (doctor's appointments, hospital delivery, baby's care), check your maternity benefits. But the programme benefits described here are provided free to all members regardless of medical aid.

Botshilu Bambinos is for all mothers, whether you deliver vaginally or via caesarean section (planned or emergency). Antenatal classes cover caesarean sections thoroughly. All programme benefits apply equally. If you end up needing unplanned caesarean, you still receive hospital bag, baby footprint frame, vaccine, road to health booklet, and all support services.

Our neonatal intensive care unit provides comprehensive care for babies needing extra support, prematurity, breathing difficulties, feeding challenges, jaundice, or other concerns. If your baby requires NICU care, you still receive programme benefits, lactation support adapts to NICU circumstances (expressing, kangaroo care, eventual breastfeeding), and our team supports you through the additional stress of NICU admission.

Botshilu Bambinos is specifically for women delivering at Botshilu Hospital. If you're planning birth elsewhere, the programme wouldn't be appropriate. However, if circumstances change and you decide hospital birth or develop complications requiring hospital delivery, we welcome you joining.

Simply call our reception at 012 798 7000 and inform us you'd like to register for Botshilu Bambinos programme. Alternatively, when you book your first antenatal appointment with your obstetrician, GP, or midwife at Botshilu, mention you want to join Botshilu Bambinos. Registration is completed during your first appointment, simple form, no fees, no complicated paperwork.
