Recap of the Accredited EMS CPD Workshop on Saturday, 24 August 2024 at Soshanguve Hotel
This past Saturday, the 24th of August 2024, Botshilu Private Hospital was honoured to host a highly engaging and insightful CPD workshop tailored specifically for EMS professionals. Held at the Soshanguve Hotel, the event attracted a significant number of dedicated EMS personnel, all eager to enhance their knowledge and skills in various critical areas of emergency medical care. This event was proudly empowered by our BotshiluCares for Healthcare Professionals project, as part of our initiatives to appreciate the dedication of EMS personnel.
Event Highlights:
The workshop, which offered 7 Clinical CPD points, featured a diverse program designed to address key challenges EMS personnel face in their daily operations. Attendees benefited from a series of expert-led sessions, covering topics essential to improving patient outcomes in emergency situations. These sessions included:
- Handling Spine Patients: Led by a Spine Surgeon Dr BN Mazabane – this session provided vital insights into the management of spinal injuries in emergency settings.
- Paediatric Burns: A Paediatric Surgeon Dr TG Morulana- highlighted the critical steps in managing burn injuries in children.
- Femoral (Femur) Fracture Management: An Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr NL Mzayiya shared strategies for treating femoral fractures, crucial for EMS responders dealing with traumatic injuries.
- Penetrating Abdominal Injuries: This session, presented by Paediatric Surgeon Dr TG Morulana on behalf of General Surgeon Dr MS Makgoka, focused on the initial management of abdominal trauma, emphasising life-saving techniques.
- Occupational Injuries: A Vascular Surgeon Dr CM Pule addressed the treatment of occupational injuries, a frequent concern for EMS personnel.
- Approach to Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) Orders: The ER Unit Manager Mr Bennedict Mogotlane provided guidance on navigating the complexities and approach to Do not Resuscitate (DNR) orders in emergency care.
Special Motivational Talk:
Even though it was not part of the official program, the event was further enriched by an inspiring motivational talk delivered by Jessica Masoma, Founder & Director of Red Elements specialising in medical billing, collections, doctors’ practices, and marketing management. Jessica took the stage to encourage EMS personnel to prioritise self-care and recognise the profound value they carry in their God-given responsibility to save lives. She emphasised the importance of assessing one’s abilities and weaknesses to foster continuous learning and stay up-to-date with the ever-evolving trends in the medical fraternity Her words resonated deeply with the attendees, leaving them motivated and empowered.
A Memorable Closing:
The workshop concluded with a heartfelt closing speech by Boitumelo Mphake, Stakeholder Relationship and Marketing Manager, and the event’s organiser. She expressed deep gratitude to all attendees, recognising their essential role in the healthcare ecosystem. In a moment of light-heartedness, she coined a new meaning for EMS – Extraordinary Medical Soul – in honour of the unwavering dedication and compassion exhibited by EMS professionals.
The day was wrapped up with a networking session, allowing participants to connect and reflect on the day’s learning.
