Physical examination provides important information but cannot detect many conditions. Blood tests reveal internal problems invisible to examination, diabetes, kidney failure, anaemia, infections, cancer markers, hormone imbalances. Needle anxiety is common. Strategies helping include: tell the phlebotomist you're anxious (they're experienced helping nervous patients), look away during the procedure (don't watch the needle), practice deep breathing or meditation, bring someone supportive with you, apply numbing cream before blood draw (available at pharmacies, apply 45-60 minutes before), and remember it's extremely quick (over in seconds). The anticipation is usually worse than the actual experience.
Blood tests typically require 5-30ml total (1-6 teaspoons), a tiny fraction of your total blood volume (adults have 5-6 litres). Your body replaces the volume within hours.
