Head injury is a devastating condition that causes major psychosocial complications. Head injuries are commonly classified as brain injury, or traumatic brain injury (TBI), depending on the extent of the head trauma. Signs and symptoms of a head injury may appear at once, within 24hours or weeks after the injury.
Brain injury is one of the leading causes of death and disability. An acquired brain injury (ABI) is an injury to the brain that is not hereditary, congenital, degenerative, or induced by birth trauma. This type of brain injury is one that has occurred after birth. There are two types of acquired brain injury: traumatic and non-traumatic.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an alteration in brain function or other evidence of a pathological condition that affects the brain caused by external trauma or force. Traumatic impact injuries can be defined as non-penetrating and penetrating.
TBI can be caused by several things such as motor vehicle accidents, falls, assaults, sports-related injuries, and firearm-related injuries. Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of brain injury and falls are the second leading.
