Dr Ndabezinhle Brian Mazabane started his early education at Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and then relocated to the UK to pursue his career in medicine. On his return from the UK, he completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree in 1986, and later his Master of General Surgery degree in 1996.
He started working at Limpopo Provincial Hospital from 2004 to 2006 after completing the necessary HPCSA requirements for registration as a General Surgeon. He was asked to join the Orthopaedic Surgery Department when they were challenged with a shortage of medical staff. It was during this tenure that he met Prof R Golele who encouraged him to further his studies by enrolling for a degree in Orthopaedics Surgery, and he subsequently qualified as an Orthopaedic Surgeon from the University of the Free State in 2011. He was later employed at the Witbank Provincial Hospital from 2012 to 2014.
Dr Mazabane’s passion was not only in general Orthopaedics, but in Spine Surgery in which he has attended many courses locally and internationally. He attended spine skills courses sponsored by Medtronic in Cape Town. In 2012, he went to Adana Turkey for a Spine course sponsored by Stryker for six months. During this course, he acquired skills in deformity correction and minimally invasive spine surgery.
He held the post of head of the Spinal unit and head of Orthopaedics at Pelonomi Hospital from 2016 to 2018. He opened his first private practice at Lenmed Randfontein from 2019 to 2021, then later moved to Zamakhuhle Private Hospital in 2021 – 2022.
Dr Mazabane’s special interests are the management of backache and limb deformity correction. Despite his interest in Spine Surgery, he does general Orthopaedic pathology and joint surgery. He strongly believes that patient management is a team effort and Orthopaedics is his passion and joy.
